Diabetes affects approximately 26 million Americans and costs over $170 billion annually in medical expenses, lost work, disability, and early death. Response to the oral medications used to treat diabetes is highly variable with some patients receiving little to no benefit from their treatment. Moreover, the mechanisms by which some diabetes medications work are not completely known. The Diabetes Multi-omic Investigation of Drug Response (DIAMOND) is an NIH-funded study to identify the genetic causes of diabetes, diabetes-related traits, and diabetes medication response. We seek to enroll nearly 5,500 individuals with diabetes from metropolitan Detroit and the surrounding areas of southeast Michigan to participate in this important study.

Started in 2007, the Study of Asthma Phenotypes and Pharmacogenomic Interactions by Race-ethnicity (SAPPHIRE) is one of the largest asthma cohort studies in the United States. Its overarching goal is to elucidate both the genetics of asthma and the pharmacogenomics of asthma treatment. Therefore, an important part of this investigation includes identifying the genes that determine whether individuals will respond to commonly prescribed asthma medications.By helping us predict whether a patient will respond to a prescribed treatment (before treatment is begun), this research will allow physicians to be more judicious in their selection of asthma medications, thereby minimizing treatment complications, maximizing asthma symptom control, and improving patient quality of life.

Currently, there are over 6000 people helping to advance the science and knowledge of asthma and asthma treatment through their participation in the SAPPHIRE cohort. The diversity of the SAPPHIRE cohort also ensures that the discoveries made through this research will advance the care of all patients with asthma.
